James Mellstrom

Arts Psychotherapist
About James:

James has worked with ITS as a Creative Expressive Therapist since 2011 and is a fully qualified Dramatherapist, graduating from Derby University in 2011.  He has always been fascinated by the relationship between therapy and drama and prior to his MA, James gained qualifications in Theatre Studies and Writing for Performance.

Drawing upon his training James employs a broad range of artistic interventions appropriate to each individual he works with, facilitating exploration into psychological, emotional and social changes in everyday life.

James has experience of working with adults, adolescents and young people in both a therapeutic and a supportive role.  As a Dramatherapist he has facilitated individual sessions for men and women living with HIV and has also led sessions for individuals and groups with Learning Disabilities.

Prior to training as a Dramatherapist James gained experience of supporting young people with social, emotional and behavioural needs in an educational setting, he also has experience of working with special needs statementing.  James has facilitated drama workshops with young children in a primary school setting.

James is currently involved in a CPD research project with ITS's Lead Dramatherapist/CET into Creative Expressive Therapies in Acquired Brain Injuries.  The research will explore how a non-verbal individual with ABI can learn to enhance communication and explore their feelings using CET techniques under the facilitation of a qualified therapist.

James believes that through Creative Expressive work the individual can reflect upon and challenge existing beliefs, attitudes and feelings whilst gaining an opportunity to try alternative ways of acting in their world.  This can help the individual to implement strategies and manage social situations with a greater understanding.

James is happy to arrange appointments for weekday evenings and weekends.
