Space Place DVD/CD ROM
The Space place
DVD
allows the adults to play 12 separate epsiodes, each focussing on a single emotion e.g happy. This allows the student to be introduced to the single emotion e.g happy and become familiar with the facial expressions, tone of voice and events that represent 'happy'.
Following this introduction, it is then possible to engage the student in a range of interactive games, identifying facial expressions and making facial expressions on the screen themselves using the TV remote control. Not all children will be able to use the contrl themselves and therefore may need the adult to control whilst they point at the screen.
The background music on the
DVD
is very engaging yet repetitive, which keeps a familiarity and a focus for the student. The stories repeat key words emphasising the emotion which again is helpful.
The voices of the characters represent people of different nationalities, this might be confusing for some students, however the different tones of voice and mannerisms, also help to engage the student.
There are card games that can be played, starting from simple games such as 'snap' through to more challenging card games for older children'.
In summary the 12;0 year old who I used this resource with, made best use of the card games and the interactive sections of the
DVD
. She benefited from being introduced to the DVD epsiodes, however they were a little young for her, despite her needing the content. I would definately make use of this DVD/CD ROM for a range of our clients, emphasising different sections dependant on their age.
