Conversational Technology

Recent research published in the journal, "Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking" indicates that a ‘conversation simulator’ which allows individuals to have a virtual conversation, can improve the social and conversational skills of children and adults with autism. The impact of autism and autistic spectrum disorders on the social and interaction skills of individuals is well known and well documented. The use of a conversation simulator could have an enormous impact upon the social skills of individuals with ASD. Many of the individuals with ASD have normal intellectual capabilities but struggle in work, education and social settings due to their limited social skills. Innovations like the conversation simulator may allow individuals with ASD to function more effectively in the larger world.

This technology may not be accessible to all yet, but it does again highlight the importance of targeting social skills for children and young people with ASD. Until such time as conversation simulators are more widely available it is important to recognise the role of therapy with Occupational and Speech and Language therapists in assisting individuals with Autistic spectrum disorders to function in the social world.

The use of technology, including Skype, MSN messenger and email by Speech and Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists as therapeutic tools is essential to ensuring children and young people develop the skills necessary to aid their social functioning.

Speech and Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy interventions that target social skills with individuals and groups are crucial to children and young people with ASD to develop the skills they need in coping with the social world.
