Back to School

September has arrived and the kids are back to school.  We hope you all enjoyed a somewhat overcast summer, but hopefully an enjoyable break from the usual routines!

It is not unusual that as a parent you start to have concerns about your child during September.  Seeing you child enter into a new class, often with new peers and most certainly with new demands, is a challenging time for both parent and child.

Of course all children need time to settle into a new routine and adapt to the demands made of them.

Some children however do need that little extra help.  It maybe that your child is:
  • Struggling to focus their attention
  • Having difficulty with their phonic skills which affects their reading, spelling and writing
  • Having difficulty understanding classroom and home based instructions
  • Having difficulty remembering information for any length of time
  • Having difficulty socialising
  • Having difficulty understanding rules and showing approrpriate behaviour
All of these above areas are very common concerns and are most certainly an area where a Speech and Language Therapist can help.

Equally your child might be struggling with :
  • Co-ordination and organisational skills
  • Self help skills in terms of dressing and self care
  • Handwriting skills
  • Changing sensory experiences - too loud, too busy, not enough moving around, too boring!
These are common concerns that one of our Occupational Therapists can help with.

When approached by parents at the beginning of term we always ask the following questions:

  1. What's changed in child's presentation
  2. What's changed in the expectations on your child
  3. What are their strengths to help them deal with this
  4. What would make the biggest difference today
Ask yourselves these questions and you are more than likely to know if you need some additional support to help you and your child get through the new circumstances.

If a listening ear will help reassure you about how to progress the situation, then pick up the phone and I shall be only too happy to discuss things through.

The most important thing we always say is, don't panic in silence, we can help signpost any services which may help you on your way.

Wishing all our parents and children a happy start back to school
